We host two Adopt-A-Family (AAF) programs throughout the year. One in the summer and one for Christmas. In the summer, donors help the family fund summer activities for the children, like swimming lessons or karate. During the holidays, donors have the opportunity to fulfill the familyʻs Christmas wishes. Scroll below to learn more about each program and how to get involved!

Summer Adopt-a-Family

Summer Adopt-a-Family is a seasonal program where community donors help the children of our Project Self-Sufficiency clients. Your donation helps pay for the child’s summer activity.

Summer Adopt-a-Family has closed for 2019. Please check out our other programs to get involved, like Christmas Adopt-a-Family or check back in around June 2020. Follow us on Facebook for the quickest updates!

Christmas Adopt-a-Family

Christmas Adopt-a-Family is a seasonal program where community donors will get matched with a PSS family and become their secret “Santa” to deliver gifts for the whole family! Sign up as an individual or as a team!

UPDATE: All of our families have been matched for 2019!

Thank you for your interest in helping a family this holiday season. Please consider participating in our Making Memories Drive where we collect experience gifts for our PSS families.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is Christmas AAF?

This is a seasonal program where community donors sign up to be matched with a Project Self-Sufficiency family. We match you with a family of a size you determine and send you the wish lists for each family member. You purchase gifts for the family and deliver them to the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection during designated drop off times. We make sure the family receives their gifts.

How do I sign up?

You can sign up online. If you are having trouble with the online form, please email or call (949) 478-1914. Update: Sign ups are now closed as all of our families have been matched!

When Is the deadline to sign up?

The deadline to sign up is Thursday, December 12, 2019. However, families are matched on a first-come, first-served basis. We recommend signing up as soon as possible.

Who gets the gifts?

You will be matched with a family in the Project Self-Sufficiency program. Each family is composed of a single parent and at least one child. Our clients are all low-income, single parents who are enrolled in college pursuing higher education in the Orange County area.

How am i matched with a family?

You indicate on your sign-up form your preference for family size. We do our best to match you with your preference. Signing up as early as possible increases the chances that we can honor your preference.

why do you limit the number of families i can adopt?

We want to make sure many different people in the community have an opportunity to adopt a family.

Can i meet the family i am matched with?

For confidentiality purposes, PSS families do not have direct contact with donors. We appreciate your understanding. You will receive a thank you card in the mail from the family you were matched with, which we forward from the family. You are welcome to include a note or card with the gifts with your holiday well wishes for the family.

How much should i spend?

We recommend buying several gifts for each family member, based on the provided wish lists and what you are comfortable with financially. Since it is a wish list, not a “needs” list, you are not under any obligation to buy every item on the list.

Why can't i wrap the gifts?

We ask that you leave the gifts unwrapped for liability and safety purposes. You are welcome to put the gifts in gift bags or baskets as long as we are able to inspect the gifts. You can also choose to provide wrapping paper and supplies for the parent.

When and where do i drop off the gifts?

This year we are excited to partner with the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection in Huntington Beach.

Drop off address:
Lutheran Church of the Resurrection
9812 Hamilton Avenue
Huntington Beach, CA 92646

Drop off times:
Thursday, December 12 from 4:00pm-7:00pm
Saturday, December 14 from 10:00am-1:00pm

Please contact us to make alternate arrangements. Email or call (949) 478-1914.

What kind of gifts are encouraged?

Most toys, clothes, small electronics, gift cards, tickets to local attractions, etc are fine. Please do not include religious materials or cash. Feel free to contact us with any questions.

I can't do Christmas AAF this year. Are there other ways to help?

We recognize that it can be a significant financial commitment to fully adopt a family. Other options would be to adopt a family as part of a group, like your extended family, neighbors, church, or other organization. Many people find it to be a fun experience to share with their friends and family, and then people can “divide and conquer” the wish lists so it’s not too big of a burden for any individual. Consider donating to our Making Memories Experience Gift Drive!

Why aren't you at the senior center in huntington beach anymore?

We received a grant that allowed us to separate from the City of Huntington Beach and expand our services to clients all over Orange County. We were offered office space at the Melinda Hoag Smith Center for Healthy Living in Newport Beach, where our program now operates from. We have limited storage space at our new office, so the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection was gracious enough to offer us a convenient location to house our Adopt-a-Family program.
